Even after everything there’s still the moon, hanging like a fingernail scratch in the night sky, still the sun coming up in the morning. There’s still my grandson’s blonde curls at the nape of his neck, fine as his mother’s when she was his age, and there’s still my mother’s breath smelling slightly of cigarette smoke and sadness.
